A Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) course is a program that prepares interpreters
to provide accurate and effective communication between health care providers and
patients who speak different languages. To become a CMI, an interpreter must meet
other certain eligibility requirements and pass a certification exam administered
by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)1 or the Certification
Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI)2. A CMI course cover topics such as medical terminology,
code of ethics, roles of the interpreter, cultural competence, and interpreting skills.
